2024 in Review

December 2024

Dear Supporters,

What an extraordinary year this has been — for everyone.  First, the Board and our dedicated staff would like to extend our warmest wishes to you and your loved ones for a joyful holiday season.

We all know that great changes are underway on the political front.  With new leadership in Washington promising to rollback environmental protections, it falls on us, state and local advocates, to combat climate change, champion environmental justice and protect the environment.  By overruling Chevron deference this summer, the Supreme Court weakened the ability of government agencies to implement environmental law and gave more power to the courts. Our environmental laws are only protective if they are upheld and enforced, and our legal work is more important than ever.

Thanks to your financial support over the past year, EELC has been able to

  • Advocate for statewide multi-billion dollar building electrification programs that equitably benefit low/moderate-income New Jerseyans on behalf of NJPEEC, NRDC, and Sierra Club
  • Defend New Jersey’s groundbreaking environmental justice regulations against legal attacks by industry and labor groups
  • Successfully challenge government approval of a massive disposal facility for dredged sediment on wetlands near the Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge and Barnegat Bay

These achievements and many others would not have been possible without the passion of our clients and the generosity of individual and foundation donors like you.  Thank you.

“It’s been mentioned many many times that the Eastern Environmental Law Center was pivotal in this incredible success [stopping unneeded NESE pipeline] by giving the legal arguments that helped inspire our governors in both states as well as other electeds,” said Cindy Zipf Executive Director of Clean Ocean Action, (pictured in middle with EELC attorney Kaitlin Morrison on the right).

We ask you to give generously at this critically important time as we work to slow climate change in the face of significant opposition.

Thank you for your unwavering support and best wishes for a Happy New Year,

Alexi Assmus, Chair of the Board, and Chris Miller, Executive Director
